Buying an LED may be expensive upfront, however, the energy savings you receive make a LED grow light worth the price. To show you proof of this claim, we created a chart that compares the startup cost and energy costs of a 500 watt LED grow light to a 1000 watt HID over a 5 year period. We display the difference in energy costs for Veg (18 hours/day) and Bloom (12 hours/day) cycles to show you how 6 hours of energy/day can create a huge energy difference between LEDs and HID over 1-5 years. After 5 years, you would save around $775 by growing with a 500 watt LED.
Taking the average cost of the Veg and Bloom cycles, we see that a $1500 500 watt LED grow light offsets the cost of a 1000 watt HID slightly after 3 years. In the future, as energy costs increase and LED prices come down, the return on investment (ROI) will come even sooner than 3 years. Weather you purchase a LED grow light now or later, after you receive your ROI you will continue to save money due to the low energy draw of LEDs. This is good news for growers looking to switch to LED grow lighting. Enjoy!
